The Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana initiative was designed to occur during the after school hours of 3pm and 6pm, a time when an adult does not usually supervise youth. Known as the"three critical hours," it is during this portion of unsupervised time that today's youth often find themselves tempted by things such as, experimentation with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; shop lifting and petty theft; vandalism and property crimes; sexual experimentation; reading and viewing pornography; fighting, gang activity, and gun violence. Developed by DMHA and IPRC, Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana provides youth with a prescribed strategy of structured and unstructured activities that promote social relationships and skills during the "three critical hours."
The DMHA and IPRC believe that targeting the Afternoons R.O.C.K. In Indiana prevention programs toward youth who are 10 to 14 years of age reaches this vulnerable population before drug use begins. In the true essence of prevention, these programs are designed to reach youth prior to their experimentation with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, during the "three critical hours" and "three critical years" when they are most likely to begin such use.
Afternoons R.O.C.K in Indiana (recreation, object lessons, culture and values, and knowledge) in Indiana is composed of Evidence Based Program Activities and Supportive Prevention Activities designed to teach youth about social and media influences, conflict resolution and refusal/resistance skills, gang and violence prevention, and structuring of leisure time to be free of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use. Afternoons R.O.C.K. In Indiana is designed to be fun and captivating for the youth rather than more school
after school.
